Farm notes: The Favia, commonly known as the Moon Coral, Green Moon Coral, Pineapple Coral, Brain Coral, or Star Coral, is a Large Polyp Stony (LPS). It is considered by many to be a fairly easy coral to maintain. These corals are very beautiful because of the unique shape and color, which enhances the value of your aquarium's visual display. It can be found in brown, tan, green and cream colors.

Favias prefer high intensity lighting, and should be placed in the top half of the aquarium. They prefer moderate to strong water current. If not moved for several months, some will attach to substrate. They are considered aggressive; they can send out transparent sweeper tentacles at night, so should be placed carefully considering the proximity of neighboring corals. Calcium, Strontium and other trace elements should be added to the water to optimize the health of the Favia.

They derive energy primarily through photosynthesis via the zooxanthellae (photosynthetic algae) living within it, however will benefit from supplemental feeding twice a week. We feed them a custom seafood mixture when they are resident in our tanks. Of interest to note is that this coral breeds quickly in an aquarium given proper nutrition and placement within your tank.
